ISSUE NO. 32 23 October 2014 Dear Parents & Caregivers FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN Tena koutou katoa (Greetings everybody) North Street School is excited to have been chosen to take part in the William Pike Challenge Award from 2015 onward. William Pike and his friend James Christie were mountaineering near the crater of Mt Ruapehu in September 2007 when the volcano erupted. William’s legs were severely crushed by rocks, mud, and snow and he was trapped on the mountain while James went for help. Among other life-threatening injuries, William’s right leg was amputated below the knee. The experience did not deter William from his love of the outdoors, and since the accident, he has continued kayaking, tramping, mountaineering, hunting, and exploring. The aims of developing the William Pike Challenge Award (WPCA) was to introduce more young people to the outdoors – and particularly to encourage them to take advantage of the environment they have around them. Although it is called an award, William said the WPCA has more of a focus on the learner challenging themselves and participating in a journey of learning in the outdoors. The WPCA is run over one school year for Year 7 and 8 students, with students participating in eight outdoor activities, 20 hours of community service and the personal development of a new sport or hobby. As part of the programme William will have a parent evening where he shares his inspirational story usually reserved for corporate events. This is an exciting opportunity that adds to the programme of options we already have for our Poutama students. We are the only school in the area who have been accepted into this award and we are excited about the possibilities it offers.
