"IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that, the Custodian of Records shall produce to the National Security Agency (NSA) upon service of this Order, and continue production on an ongoing daily basis thereafter for the duration of this Order, unless otherwise ordered by the Court, an electronic copy of the following tangible things: all call detail records or "telephony metadata" created by Verizon for communications (i) between the United States and abroad; or (ii) wholly within the United States, including local telephone calls. This Order does not require Verizon to produce telephony metadata for communications wholly originating and terminating in foreign countries." We live in a nation where our government can tap our phones and monitor our online activity, where whistleblowers are thrown in prison, where public protests are met with nationwide coordinated crackdowns, grand juries, and entrapment harkening back to the COINTELPRO tactics and Red Scares of yesteryear, where protest groups are routinely infiltrated by paid informants, where the federal government has given the executive branch the right to deploy military force without congressional approval including to kill our citizens with unmanned drones, where our two-party system provides a choice between corporate capitalism and corporate capitalism and there is a perpetual gulf between the policy decisions of the government and the polled wishes of the people, where people are held in indefinite detention without charge, and where a for-profit prison-industrial complex makes us the nation with the highest number prisoners per capita. We are to believe that this nation is the leader of the free world.
