IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL Today is a day of mixed feelings for me; 39 years ago I was blessed with a beautiful baby girl whom the Lord loaned to me for an all too brief 17 years, one month, and 13 days. The Bible says, Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. (Isaiah 49:15 KJV). When he wrote ...yea, they may forget..., at first I felt angry. I could never forget my child, regardless of how long shes been gone. But Isaiah was right when he said they might forget because, since sin entered the world, and now as evil seems to permeate so much of life, we hear of women abusing their child, or allowing a spouse or boyfriend to hurt their little one. We even hear of women like Susan Smith and Andrea Yates, both of whom killed their children by drowning them. Its hard to understand how a mother loses her natural love for children she carried for 9months, nurtured and raised for years, and for whom she once held hopes and dreams. Solomon dealt with a similar situation when the two mothers came to him arguing for possession of one child. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. (1 Kings 3:26 KJV). He knew that the true mother would rather give her child up than allow it to be hurt, but the one lacking that maternal instinct to protect their child wouldnt. And we know that, in the end times, this pattern of dispassionate, selfish acts will only become more common! This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (2 Timothy 3:1-5 KJV). But Isaiah also gave a promise, in the first verse noted above: yet will I not forget thee. This is referring to our Heavenly Father. He will never turn away from His children of faith, the ones that remain true to Him! ...be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5 KJV). We have the assurance of God carrying us through any sorrow, challenge, worries, or concerns. Like Job, John Spofford, the author of these lyrics, understood this promise. He depended on his faith when his only son died of scarlet fever, when all his wealth was destroyed in the great Chicago Fire, and when his four daughters died when sailing with their mother, their ship to England sank in the Atlantic. As he was sailing to England to rejoin his wife, who was saved alone, he asked the captain to tell him approximately where his daughters ship went down. As he looked out over the waters, he penned the words to my Jeanne
