IT WAS A CALLING FOR ME !! Dr Emma Eilu strolls in, red-eyed and dragging himself, as I’m concluding with Dr Senoga. He politely declines my request for an interview, citing lack of sleep. “I have just pulled an all-nighter in theatre and I’m just heading to my place to get some rest,” he explains. Time check is 12.07pm. With some persuasion, he reluctantly agrees to a few minutes of questioning. He tells me that he relocated to his home area in Soroti after his studies. To his dismay, it soon dawned on him that there was urgent need for specialists to attend to mothers. “I got tired of having to refer emergencies to Mbale Hospital, which was several hundred kilometres away. The cost of fuelling the ambulance on top of the abject poverty of the residents meant that many mothers ended up dying because they could not receive adequate medical treatment,” he recounts. His hope is that when he is done, he relocates back home to help his kinsmen. Asked if the thought of staying in Kampala has crossed his mind, for the better pay, he says, “Money has never been my motive. No price can be tagged to the joy I get from seeing people get better.”
