ITS WELL KNOWN that Filipinos in the creative industries travel - TopicsExpress

ITS WELL KNOWN that Filipinos in the creative industries travel far and wide as white-collar overseas workers. What’s less appreciated is how many jobs these industries generate. According to data compiled by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), workers in the advertising, film and video, music, performing arts, publishing, broadcasting, visual and graphic arts make up 11% of the Philippine labor force, a share that is the largest in the world. At the same time the Philippines ranks 22nd in creatives’ contribution to GDP, which suggests a large disconnect between how much we depend on the creative industries for employment and how much we value their contributions to the economy. Their share of Philippine GDP is only 5%, suggesting an industry punching below its weight relative to the numbers employed. It turns out that the stereotype of the “starving artist” is very much supported by the data, and it’s no surprise why Filipino creatives seek employment in countries where their labor is better appreciated.
