Iannis Xenakis: a powerfully compelling alternative voice in the post-war European avant-garde, and probably the greatest successor to Varèse. Which are his Top Ten orchestral works, and how would you rank them? This is my attempt: 1. Jonchaies (1977) 2. Ioolkos (1996) 3. Pithoprakta (1956) 4. ST48 (1962/1968) 5. Ata (1987) 6. Troorkh (1991) 7. Shaar (1982) 8. Metastasis (1954) 9. Antikhthon (1971) 10. Roai (1992) I left out Aïs (1980), because its really a sort of virtuoso cantata for voice and orchestra; sorry if I missed out your favorite! Im off to watch/listen to the DVD of Kraanerg Mrs Santa left in my stocking.
