Ice Bucket Challenge Response (and why im not doing it) Thanks to Niall D C Cowley for reminding me to do this post. To be clear, I’m not into some of the slacktavist shaming going on at the moment, I think peoples generosity of spirit to donate and raise awareness for worthy causes is heartening, however frivolous the means might be (But then I would say that, it being my job and all). Instead I have donated money (upon Niall’s suggestion) to a UK charity called Medical Aid for Palestinians map-uk.org. MAP helping to get medical supplies and expertise into Gaza hospitals. Its not that I don’t think ALS or Macmillan are worthy recipients of my donation. Its just for me what’s happening is Gaza, Syria and Iraq constitute the worst of what humanity is capable of and we need to mobnilise to stop these atrocities. Any tiny thing I can do to help that I will. Seriously, I applauded people efforts to support ALS. People are learning the power of social media as a medium for activism and fundraising, its great. I hope you continue to do silly things for causes throughout the year, continue to use your privileged position in humanity and shout it from the metaphorical/digital rooftops. Don’t just make this the one thing you do all year. Continue to do what you can about the stuff you care about, it is, of course, how change happens. pxx PS: But I might add, seeing Anna Wintour do the Ice Bucket Challenge has made my life.
