~ Ice-Bucket Insanity ~ Remember the ice-bucket challenge? You know, the viral meme which has encouraged millions of people to throw a bucket of ice-cold water over their head? Well, viral memes like this are great for raising awareness. I had never heard of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) until the ice-bucket challenge. The ice-bucket challenge was a success. Many people from around the world have given money to support research and help researchers understand ALS. Good on them. Only a small % of what most people donate goes to the cause, but thats another story. Actually, I already made a post about that. You can read it here --> https://facebook/AdamLandonJones/posts/10154548686865534 Anyway, I just did a quick google search to see what the scientific literature has to say about the cause of ALS. A quick search revealed a few research papers. Some of you might find them interesting. Heres what the first one said: In conclusion, the meta-analysis suggests that ALS risk is associated with use of pesticides. ~ SOURCE: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22521219 And heres another: .... these results appear to indicate that occupational exposure to pesticides is a risk factor for ALS ~ SOURCE: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20847462 In other words, the peer-reviewed scientific literature on ALS shows a clear connection between ALS and our increased use of pesticides. Its quite likely that a big way to reduce your chances of suffering from ALS is to eat organic (pesticide free food). Sure, it costs more but theres a good chance youll dramatically reduce your chances of suffering from ALS. Perhaps there should be an increase in awareness of the importance of the organics industry and a move away from mass farming practices, that not only require pesticides but also deplete the fertility of the soil. Prevention is better than cure. A price paid by future generations. I dont mean to be insensitive. Its just a thought.
