Ice Cream Girl She swayed to the music Losing herself in the rhythm Chocolate ice cream from a two-scoop cone Dripping unnoticed down her hand Onto her crumpled white shirt Creating symbolic sugar stains Passers-by could read As the blueprint to her misery A crowd formed around her Eyes blinded by tears, They wept openly For this unseeing woman child Isolated in a world of strangers And strangeness Staring blankly as the stains grew, Enclosing her lap in a dark stickiness That reminded her of adolesence, She knew she was being watched, judged, Idolized Each stranger needing her for salvation, Each hoping her movement Would open the door To their hidden lives. Each one transfixed On her being She knew she could sit forever. Eventually the sun would melt her Into a pool of ice cream and humanity The humanity simply escaping Leaving only a sticky sidewalk mess People would step in And curse about. She chuckled silently Understanding in advance Knowing her sticky remains Were forming now In front of the eyes of strangers. Knowing soon she would be forgotten Knowing they would never understand
