The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons, responsible for muscle control throughout the body, in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the brain is no longer capable of controlling muscles. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Stephen Hawking is also a victim from ALS. Yet, theres no effective cure so far. The Ice Bucket Challenge is meant to make people feel how ALS patients feel from the disease and raise awareness for ALS.
