Id like to comment on something I noticed a few days ago. I rarely drive during normal traffic times around the area because I know that the bridge on 68th will be crowded. The other day, at 11:30 am, which isnt a terribly busy rush hour time, I had to go left onto Bothell Way. My friend who regularly travels straight through the light going from LFP toward Bothell on Bothell Way says that she hates that light because so many people turning left off 68th run the red. I think I may have seen why. The left turn light is extremely short during certain periods of the day! On this particular day, Tuesday at 11:30, traffic was light coming from all directions, but there was a long back-up in the left lanes. The light didnt stay on long enough for the lanes to empty! It let about four cars go through, when 8 were waiting. As a result I saw at least two cars each light run it. I personally ended up sitting through at least three greens at 175th and 68th cross because the light hadnt changed on 68th and then through another two greens at Bothell Way because it changed too quickly. Its easy to see why someone would decide to run the light rather than wait again. I dont know what the solution is to this. Is it hard to re-calibrate the lights? Can we install a camera that counts cars? We could use punishment like a ticket cam or police supervision, but I think wed have happier citizens if we can fix the problem rather than punishing the outcome. With all this talk about pedestrian safety and sidewalks (which clearly needs to be addressed) I thought Id throw in my two cents about another dangerous traffic situation.
