Id like to introduce yall to my latest science project. His name is Ben and hes 13. Not only was this his first DJ lesson, today was his first time touching a pair of turntables. Im overwhelmed with giddiness as I write this! Seriously, if I could only describe to you how excited I am to take on, not just another pupil, but a young one at that. The easiest, most fun students to teach are the young ones because they arent jaded or married to a fix way of thinking. In one hour I taught Ben the basics of: 1) operating a turntable 2) dominate the mixer 3) identifying the one or down beat on Impeach The President 4) the mechanics of releasing the record or as Ben would say guiding the record so that it falls on beat. 5) looping Impeach The President and 6) accentuating each drop with a baby scratch in order to enhance the overall sound of the drums being looped. Some of yall experienced DJs/Tablist may be thinking, yeah but thats easy. That may be true for the seasoned vet. But when you consider just how much information the brain of this 13 year old kid is simultaneously processing (the headphone cues, separating the the drums hes hearing in his headphones from the drums coming out of the speaker, cueing up the one, rhythmically aligning himself with the tempo Impeach The President is playing at, manning the mixer and placing the one where it needs to be) then youll definitely appreciate how this drill is in fact super difficult. Especially for a pure novice. Yeah... after experiencing somewhat of a New School hangover now that the semester is over, there couldnt be a better time to adapt Ben as my new disciple. Ill be posting videos of Ben over the coming months so stay tuned. The #RobSwiftDoctrine of DJing/Turntablism continues to spread...
