Id like to respond to the many people who have written to me on this page expressing their concern for Naomi Clarke, and their support for Naomi and her husband Paul. Firstly, Id like to thank everyone for taking the time to express their point of view to me on this issue. Its important that there is an ongoing discussion between members of the community and people in Government. Obviously this issue is something that people feel very passionate about. I understand that passion - I have been working to improve access to disability support services as both a Minister and as Premier. South Australia was one of the first states to sign on to the National Disability Insurance Scheme - now called DisabilityCare - because we fundamentally believe that every Australian living with a disability deserves appropriate support, and the ability to manage that support in a way that suits them best. When DisabilityCare is fully implemented, it will fully cover the expenses associated with in-home care that Naomi requires. To clarify a point that has been raised here a number of times - no one is trying to force Naomi to go into a nursing home. Naomi currently receives funding equivalent to 50 hours per week. Naomi has chosen to self-manage her disability support package and can spend it in any way she chooses. My office has been in touch with Disability SA. They will be discussing with Naomi how she can be best supported, and are working with her to further assess her care requirements and help her stay at home.
