Id like to resume my roadside vigils, but I stopped because I couldnt find the right slogan. Maybe you can help me think of one? The roadside vigils are where I stand beside a major road during rush hour, holding up a sign that passing motorists can read. There are two criteria that Id like to satisfy. On the one hand, I want the message to be very short, and ideally it should also call upon the audience to do something -- even something very minor, very small, very easy. For a long time, I was using a sign that said HONK FOR PEACE, which met this criteria. But on the other hand, the message has to reflect my current political outlook. Merely being for peace is not enough. Everyone claims to be for peace, but everyone has a different notion of how to achieve it. For instance, Obama believes (or claims that he believes) that killing people with drones is the road to peace. In recent months, I have sometimes used a sign that said Is WAR inherent in CAPITALISM? Admittedly, its a rhetorical question. Theres no doubt whatsoever in my mind that the answer is yes. But I felt it was more thought provoking if I posed it as a question. Heres one that has just occurred to me; Ill think about using it: THINK about ENDING CAPITALISM. See, it asks people to something. Im looking for your suggestions, your comments. Of course, ultimately the decision will be based on my own political views, my own ideas about psychology, and my own feelings, since Im the one carrying the sign. Maybe some of you will make your own signs. Anyway, Id be interested in seeing what you think of all this. Thanks.
