Id like to share with you three stories of exile Ive been told by Venezuelans in the last 24 hours: The first person fled Venezuela and sought asylum in the USA for denouncing a corrupt Chavista mayor to the authorities. He was hounded and persecuted and forced to leave the country fearing for his and his familys safety. The second, used to run a profitable and successful business in Caracas. When he was asked to take part in dirty dealings, he refused. Suddenly, he had nothing. He left for the USA and is now facing difficulties and living a life very different to the one he built in Venezuela. The third, an elderly couple, were threatened by a colectivo in Caracas. They were told that if they did not pay them a certain amount of money, they would both be murdered. They refused to do so and went to the police, asking them for their protection. The police then asked for a bribe even larger than the original amount the colectivos had asked for. The colectivos would drive by their house and fire shots into the air to intimidate them- among other things. Realizing they were unprotected and targeted by both the criminal gangs AND the police, they were forced to flee to the USA, and leave everything they had humbly built throughout their lives, out of fear. I could share with you a hundred more stories like these. It is too heartbreaking. Too frustrating. Too infuriating. These are all people Ive never met before and never met each other, but there is one common thread between them. They are all VICTIMS of these last 15 years of government in Venezuela, and its criminal ideology and behavior. I am so sorry for all of them…
