Id like to start this review with an introduction as to why this is the greatest album of all time, at least for me and my father (please skip if you dont want a bit of background). Back when I first got this album I was listening to it through whilst doing something else that happened to take all of my attention. Not paying much attention to the music (regrettable mistake), suddenly the song Mistur comes on. My father, who was 47 years old at time and an old punk rocker turned black metal fan, overheard the song and came into my room. He and I fell in love with the song as soon as it started and later the rest of the album became our favourites of all time. He said that it was one of the most beautiful compositions he had ever heard. The perfect link between the amazing, almost ballad lead guitar with the stunning keyboards and rhythm guitar created one of the most incredible progressions - comparable to the intro to Beethovens 7th. My father died approximately two years later. The song Mistur and the last half of the song Attende were played at his funeral, and he wouldt have wanted anything else. Across all of the metal genres I listen to; death, black, funeral doom, folk, viking and all of the other fusion and sub-genres, no album has stuck out quite like this one. Mistur is basically a superior reincarnation of Windir and Windir is one of my favourite bands, so this is definitely saying a lot. The songs are written and produced perfectly. Mistur has the signature Sognametal vocal style and lead progressions down perfectly and it suits the music better than ever before in that scene. The last half of the song Attende has one of the most incredible uplifting sensations you can receive from listening to a song. The undeniable atmosphere is what completes the whole album, as if it is a ballad to the spirit of Valfar himself. I doubt Ive heard more true musicianship than on this album. The songs and progressions flow seamlessly and naturally, often conjuring mental images of geometry. While being the weakest song on the album, Skoddefjellet is still a very fair representation of Misturs sound and doesnt at all detract from the albums overall integrity. Every track has an epic outro or middle section with the odd bit of Emperor influence in there. If I had to compare this album with any other, I think it would have to be Windirs - Arntor, Ein Windir. I can hear a lot of the influence from songs such as, Saknet and Svartesmeden Og Lundamyrstrollet from that album. I firmly believe that 100% is no overstatement and if there was a possible way to give it more I would. Definitely for fans of viking or classically influenced extreme metal.
