Id like to talk about literary snobbery. I communicate with many people who earn their living (at least partially) by writing words. Quite often its easy to see that they put much thought into choosing and arranging those words so that they carry a poetic lilt. As far as Im concerned, thats not only fine but its good exercise. But my appreciation ends when they start using words that nobody else EVER uses to convey the same point that they could make with plain language. Its nothing more than showing off. Some seem to feel that they need to challenge the reader and thats cool if your reader happens to be of like mind but in my experience, most readers want to be entertained and not be subjected to old high school reading comprehension assignments. If youve ever read great authors like Hemingway or commercially successful authors like Spillane, you may have noticed that you didnt need to carry a dictionary in your other hand. Just sayin Comments?
