If Cavani goes to Real Madrid, who should Chelsea turn to? Chelsea’s quest to bring in a genuinely top quality striker who can lead the line and score goals continues. Since the departure of Didier Drogba, the Blues have endured something of a striker crisis this term – neither Fernando Torres or Demba Ba were able to fulfil their promise of formerly top class 20-plus goals per season strikers. Now, with the return of Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge, the Blues will be hoping to bring in the very best quality available to get the Portuguese boss off to a good start next term. Chelsea had in recent months and weeks been linked with some of the world’s finest talent – the likes of Radamel Falcao, Neymar and Edinson Cavani. The former pair have, however, signed for AS Monaco and Barcelona, respectively, and whilst Cavani has yet to agree a deal officially, the signs are pointing at a move to Mourinho’s former club in the Spanish capital, Real Madrid. If the Blues lose out on yet another top striker target, where next should they turn their attention? Robert Lewandowski is one of the last few top quality highly-coveted strikers left available on the continent but, at present, Borussia Dortmund are more than a little reluctant to let him go. Meanwhile, Stevan Jovetic of Fiorentina is still yet to secure his future – he has been linked with London rivals Arsenal who seem to have cooled their interest in recent weeks, as Juventus entered the frame. Both the Polish striker and his Montenegrin counterpart would be quality additions for Mourinho but could he look a little closer to home for his star striker? Wayne Rooney handed in a transfer request to Manchester United and it is well documented that Mourinho has been an admirer of the Englishman for many years – upon his re-appointment at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho seemed to imply a vague interest in Rooney but as yet it’s still unclear whether United are in fact prepared to sell him. Even closer to homes, Mourinho has Torres and Ba – the boss has stated he hopes to keep the Spaniard and work with him but, of course, he could just be saying that, whilst Ba seems to have been something of a stop-gap signing by his predecessor Rafael Benitez. There is of course Romelu Lukaku who enjoyed a sensation run or form with West Brom this term but will that be enough to earn him a starting place in Mourinho’s line-up week in week out? Chelsea were reportedly prepared to spend big on Falcao, and Neymar – they may still be able to spend big to sign Cavani but if their, effectively, third-choice striker target evades them, Lewandowski has to be next in line. If they fail in attempts to sign him, then Jovetic but after that the options get less and less appealing. Perhaps Mourinho should just give up on all of the above and sign Burak Yilmaz? Whatever he does, he can’t surely be hoping that Torres and Ba will suddenly turn it all around under him, can he? He’s the special one but I don’t even Jose Mourinho is that special.
