If Heath Ledger had lived to make The Dark Knight Rises, I think the movie would have worked better without Bane at all. I would have liked to see Joker team up with Scarecrow to bring about the Gotham apocalypse. They could have made part of the film a Joker origin. This would have allowed them to use the Killing Joke as a template much the same way Batman Begins used Batman: Year One, despite having a different story. It would have been cool to discover that Joker was actually another crusader that had had a falling out with the League of Shadows and been driven mad by the experience. I really liked Scarecrows cameo in Rising and like the idea of a superhero sequel that has two villains from prior films take down the hero. Plus, death by exile was probably the best scene in the TDKR. One of the things that I loved about the first two movies is that each villain brought out a different side of Batman. Tom Wilkinson, Cillian Murphy, Liam Neeson, Aaron Eckhart and the late great Heath Ledger all gave amazing performances. I know a lot of yall love Ryan Gosling but, to me, hell never hold a candle to Heath Ledger.
