If I were in the distant-time era where inuit freely changed - TopicsExpress

If I were in the distant-time era where inuit freely changed forms, Id probably turn into a Qapvik right now. Resource development is an important issue, but some points in this discussion, especially about oil drilling, really riles me up. Some speakers spoke on behalf of whole states or territories using phrases like we all support it. Definitive words like all, always, never while representing more than yourself shouldnt be used. All Alaskans do not support and encourage exploration or extraction of oil on our precious lands. My favorite point in the discussion so far was made by Okalik Eegeesiak. She said We cannot depend on non-renewable resources only. Our youth are smarter than that; we cannot limit our youth to focus only on resource development of non-renewable resources. Some development is inevitable, but it is not the be all, end all. We can find ways to be successful without exploiting our lands and waters which are the very foundation of our native cultures. It is our responsibility to work towards honoring our traditions while accepting modernization. That does not mean jeopardizing future generations from enjoying uqsruq, beluga maktak, salmon strips, akpiks, caribou paniktak, musk ox meat etc. We need to not only make sure these resources EXIST, but also make sure they are HEALTHY. I believe that is possible, and crucial to the perpetuation of our Iñupiaq culture especially.
