If I were to cite one Philippine band whose music aligned with my taste--both melody, structure, and production-wise, The Camerawalls would be one of them. After all, the bands album Pocket Guide to the Otherworld (2008) was included in my definitive list of albums released from 1960s to 2010s. And Im proud to share with you, especially to the fans not only of The Camerawalls music but also to the entire New Wave music enthusiasts, haLf man haLf eLfs original rearrangement of one song from that album. Heres our version of Canto de Maria Clara, recorded live in December 2013 at our show at Sams Place here in Winnipeg. The original structure of this song followed a 3/4 time signature all through out. Because of my penchant for complicated structures, I inserted two segments of 4/4 t.s. into the song (intro and pre-instrumental interlude) and the highlight of our version is the incorporation of a snippet of the Philippine Folk tune Tinikling (Bamboo Dance) into the instrumental interlude--I thought of this concept while rearranging the song; I just felt that we had to make the song more Philippinized because, after all, the words that Clemen Castro used was by the Philippine great thinker Jose Rizal. Without further ado, here is Canto de Maria Clara (Tinikling mode) by haLf man haLf eLf - reposted from Alfie Mellas facebook account.
