If Ive said it once, Ive said it 1000 times, common core is a set of goals for particular grade/age levels, not a method of teaching those goals. The methods that the publishers are pushing are absolutely flawed in many instances. This example of a common core math problem by WNYC asks if we, as parents, would be able to help our kids solve it. Math has never been my thing but Id say that this question is pretty straight forward and solvable. And our kids who bring this homework home were taught in the classroom how to solve this before given the hw (if your kids math teacher ever sends home homework that they expect the kid to understand but havent actually taught the method to solve in class, thats a teacher problem, not a curriculum problem, btw) so they should be able to walk through the method anyway. My go-to method of math hw assistance when I dont have a clue is to ask my kid to explain to me how to do this type of problem, and by the time they finish explaining it to me, they usually realize that they know how to do it themselves. Last nights homework on domains and ranges was WAY out of my league, so we turned to Khan Academy (which still made no sense to me), but after one short video, my kid said, Oh thats all? I couldve figured that out.
