If We Left, They Wouldnt Have Nobody We just loved this story. Maurice Rowland and Miguel Alvarez were working at an assisted living home last fall. When it shut down, Maurice - the cook - and Miguel - the janitor - stayed to take care of the residents left behind because the rest of the staff had left when they stopped getting paid. The elderly residents needed round-the-clock care. I would only go home for one hour, take a shower, get dressed, then be there for 24-hour days, says Alvarez. Even though they wasnt our family, they were kind of like our family for this short period of time, said Rowland. Alvarez and Rowland spent several days caring for the elderly residents until the fire department and sheriff took over.
