The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States is an expression of fealty to the flag of the United States , composed by Francis Bellamy in 1892 and formally adopted by Congress as the pledge in 1942. 1942, during WW II, when Japanese Americans were interned in concentration camps for no other reason than they were of Japanese extraction. Citizens of German extraction were require to carry ID cards, but not citizens of Italian extractio, even though Italy was allied with Nazi Germany. On Flag Day 1954, the words under God were added, largely because of the Cold War, and the machinations of Senator Joseph McCarthy, a Republican U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin Beginning in 1950, McCarthy became the most visible public face of a period in which Cold War tensions fueled fears of widespread Communist subversion. He was noted for making claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside the United States federal government and elsewhere. Ultimately, his tactics and inability to substantiate his claims led him to be censured by the United States Senate.
