If a country wants to encourage the acquisition of knowledge and the development of scientific thought then it must resist the forces of dogma and repression. It is not a coincidence that the most scientifically advanced countries also promote freedom of thought and the right to peacefully disagree among its population. In the increasingly scientific and globalised world of today, an open environment that promotes critical thinking and peaceful coexistence is necessary for advancement.
