If anyone is wondering about whether they should go in to the CBD - TopicsExpress

If anyone is wondering about whether they should go in to the CBD or South Brisbane over the next few days, I did a reasonable amount of research and talked to quite a few others who did as well. My team is based on Melbourne St right across the road from the convention centre, and I came to the conclusion that I couldnt reasonably ask them to come in to the office at all during the week of the G20. That was a pretty easy call, because my team is used to working remotely anyway, and were so close to the convention centre. I do, however, know of offices further from the convention centre - including some across the river in the CBD - which have decided to close completely for the entire week, despite the lost productivity. I know of one further out which has given the week off to all staff who would have to travel through the city to get to work, asking those people to spend the week pursuing personal research or updating their skills. So if youre trying to decide whether to go in, or whether to send your kids in to school in the area, just remember that large companies spent a lot of effort researching the situation, and decided to lose a big pile of money because they felt they couldnt ask their employees to travel to the CBD or South Brisbane - or in one case, even to travel through it during their commute. The security will be tight, and Im sure the authorities will be doing their very best to keep the environment a safe one - but I suspect their priorities will be focused on keeping heads of state safe, not locals. I sincerely hope there will be no incidents, and I expect it will probably be generally safe to be in the area during this week, but I wasnt prepared to ask my team to do it, and a lot of other employers werent either.
