If anyone thinks that this Syria thing is all "real", think again. In something called "the Damascus cable", written by William Roebuck, Director for the Office of the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and leaked to Wikileaks a lil ways back, the whole strategy for the U.S. to take over Syria has been planned far in advance: “This cable summarizes our assessment of vulnerabilities, and suggests that there may be actions, statements and signals, that the U.S. can send that will improve the likelihood of such opportunities arising. “The proposals would need to be fleshed out and converted into real actions and we need to be ready to move quickly to take advantage of such opportunities. “As the end of 2006 approaches” wrote Roebuck, “Bashar appears … stronger than he has done in two years. The country is economically stable …regional issues seem to be going Syria’s way. However, vulnerabilities and looming issues may provide opportunities to up the pressure on Bashar … some of these vulnerabilities can be exploited to put pressure on the regime.
