If someone disagrees with you and they are in an emotional state of mind, it does not matter how many facts, charts, graphs, research, and data you have on your side, they will not give in. They turn towards name calling and nitpicking every word you use to try to find fault in anything you say to make you look less intelligent. Case in point, the only people who have disagreed with me on Facebook about the lack of baitfish in Lake Michigan have all been charter boat captains. Because they see bait in fish stomachs, and on graphs while fishing, they feel their knowledge is superior to the data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey. I understand their frustration, they have thousands of dollars in gear, boats, and their business invested. For a lot of them it is their means of income for their families. I dont want any of them to lose their jobs or income. What I dont understand is why they want to argue the data and ignore the fact that our DNR does not have a plan in place to supplement the industry if and when the salmon fishing becomes horrible. Me, I prefer to be proactive, have a plan of action, and to be ready for problems. I can only assume they dont want to deal with the challenge and they dont want anyone to bring it to light because it may hurt their business. I guess they may feel that anything that is said in a negative tone about Lake Michigan salmon fishing is saying something negative about their business. Well guys, all I can say is good luck. The information is out there, you can choose to use it and make the situation better, or procrastinate and get whatever comes. The choice is yours.
