If someone wants to, they can track pretty much any cell phone - TopicsExpress

If someone wants to, they can track pretty much any cell phone (like, say, yours) from anywhere in the world using just your cell phone number and a few hundred bucks in equipment or services. Why? Because the entire worldwide phone networks were designed assuming that everyone who had low level access would be trustworthy. But now anyone can access it for cheap, and theres no authentication or encryption on much of the system. Remember folks, the systems you use every day were mostly designed two or three decades ago, when security was often an afterthought. Even in the past decade, many companies have deliberately weakened their systems to allow government access, like when Microsoft bought Skype and killed their encrypted chat option. The point is, you should never consider anything you do with a computer to be truly private. Sure, you dont expect anyone to target you, but what if there is a massive leak some day containing millions of users info, and you just happen to be one of them? Then all your private interactions would be available for anyone curious enough to look. Your location information is not secure. Your email is probably not secure. Your text messages are probably not secure. Your browser history, cloud photos, and anything on your cell phone is probably not secure. You may never be a victim of a breach, but you could be. Keep that in mind when you use technology. When possible use encryption and open source. Nothing is foolproof but you want to make leaking your info difficult. When possible, dont give them the info in the first place. I ditched chrome for Firefox on my computer and phone. I use DuckDuckGo for searches (using google when that doesnt turn up what I want). I use Linux instead of windows, and use the NoScript Firefox extension so that most tracking scripts get blocked. Every website tries to find out who you are, and NoScript helps. More than anything, just pay attention. Learn about how data moves on the web and dont give things away without even knowing it.
