If there is one thing I am certain of more than ever, it is that Black Americans are not Africans. Some may want to be, claim to be, act as if we are, but we are not. We are of Africa descent, surely, but culturally, and in every way that matters in today’s world, we are American. We are no more African than the average White American is English or Scottish or Irish or whatever…we are all simply American! We are part of a diverse collective that makes us unique and hard to describe but anyone who spends any significant time abroad knows that there is indeed an American identity and we are a part of it. The more I travel the more that simple fact reigns true for me.
