If this was a first-year paper on generic utilitarian philosophy, it would be an A paper. But this isnt a classroom, and I dont agree with this authors contribution. There is value in thinking critically about where you put your money. However, people who donate their money, time and energy to the ALS Society (or any charity) with the intention of benefiting the charitys cause SHOULD NOT BE MADE TO FEEL ASHAMED OF WHAT THEYVE DONE. The ice bucket challenge has not actively stolen money from other charities, but rather has raised money which otherwise would not have been donated to charity (as per this realization: tinysprouti.tumblr/post/95127863077/on-the-als-ask-following-that-train-of-thought). When something trends on the internet, we tend to assume its for personal attention and vanity. For some, this may be true but we shouldnt disgrace the fact that millions of real dollars have been raised for a very real and terrible illness.
