If we look at the context of these verses, we are reminded of the Israelites reputation of idolatry. They claimed that they followed God, but then indulged in all kinds of worldly pleasures, all the while continually questioning if God was indeed trustworthy with their lives. Earlier in chapter 10, verse 5 even says that God was not pleased with most of them! What then should we do to please God? Flee from idolatry: from anything that competes with our allegiance to Christ, and distracts us from worshipping Him with the reverence He’s due. We cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too. Where does our allegiance lie? Have we committed our lives fully to Christ, or do we try to “ride the fence,” idolizing the things of this world? God is a jealous God. He will not tolerate one of His creation worshipping or bowing down to a god other than Himself. 1 Corinthians 10:14 1 Corinthians 10:21-22
