If we understand ourselves to be victims then we essentially wind up being helpless and hopeless. Therefore, even if extraordinary difficulties come our way (and such a thing is certainly possible in this life) it is wiser, more helpful and more effective for us to believe we are not trapped in a situation in which we have no options. Also, it is more helpful for us to think, pray and take action with the conviction that something can be done. Consider the following idea, it is a more helpful understanding: With God’s strength and guidance there is a way forward. Likewise, if we play a role in convincing others they are victims, we are generally not being particularly helpful to them. This is not to say that no persons are ever victimized. Of course this happens. But if we convince people that their basic status in life is that of a victim we tend to render them impotent. They will quit taking action. They will quit thinking about solutions. They will quit trying. “Might as well give up, right? What’s the point in trying? After all, I’m a helpless victim. Guess I’ll go take another nap!” This mindset results in virtually no possibility of a good outcome. The self-understanding in which we reject the idea that we are victims is not, so much, about positive thinking. It is, however, about a productive and advantageous state of mind that is more likely to result in solutions to problems as well as effective, vital, wise living. You and I are not victims. We are children of God. And God is able to do… “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…” Ephesians 3:20
