If were okay with euthanizing pets because they are suffering and there is no hope for recovery - animals who can never look you in the face and tell you, honestly, that they understand what is happening to them, that their quality of life has fallen below what they can live with and that its time for them to go... ...if we can end a companion animals life and call it a mercy... ...how is there a debate when a human being has sat down with his or her doctors, been educated about their degenerative, fatal disease and how it will progress, and had an open discussion with their family and chosen the same path? If youre worried about what God thinks, well - if you are right and there is a God, shes expedited her own judgment process by checking out. There is no reason to attack her and her family members. Parents have just lost a daughter, more than any parent should ever have to bear. A husband lost his wife and, with her, his dreams of having a family with the woman he loved. Someone died. She died of a horrific brain tumor that had stopped responding to treatment, was inoperable and was starting to rob her of an acceptable quality of life. The pill she took doesnt change that. It wouldnt have been an option if the cancer wasnt about to kill her. Its not suicide when youre on the short path to dying a horrible, painful death. Its euthanasia. If your dog had a seizure and you took him to the vet and were given the news that he or she had an inoperable brain tumor and that treatment would extend the time, but lower the quality of life even further, a compassionate person would opt to have the dog euthanized to prevent him or her from lingering in pain and misery. How do we not afford another human that same respect and mercy? I dont get it.
