If you are a professional or even a dedicated performer, do yourself a favour and find this film, and watch it. Not only does Soylent Green give popular culture one of the best closing lines in film history, but the performances in this cult classic are absolutely peerless. Love him or hate him, Charlton Heston is superb as a corrupt cop who ultimately is overcome by a conscience. Edward G. Robinson gives one of the best (and last great) performances of his career. The dinner scene, between the two, overjoyed at the pleasure in the taste of a simple leaf of lettuce, bourbon and an apple ... Spectacular. All too disturbingly realistic portrayal of our world in the not too distant future, where real food, privacy, running water and a bar of soap are luxuries only the supremely wealthy can afford. Even a simple spoonful of strawberry jam elicits a spasm of ecstasy ... Great film, and a classic lesson in situational acting.
