Help us solve the housing shortage.” Does it matter that this message is coming from an ethnic Chinese? Well, yes and no. On the one hand, it exculpates her from charges of racism. On the other, it’s a policy statement any candidate could have made. Wong is adamant that she does not want to racialize the issue. But it is significant that Wong, as an ethnic Chinese and an immigrant, could formulate that policy. For her, it isn’t about race or ethnicity, but it is about culture — about outreach, citizen responsibility and the democratic voice. In a city where we too often throw around easy stereotypes, she isn’t one.
