If you are going to the victim, you are re-traumatizing a community by saying, now how do you want me to apologize to you? This is a conversation for non-native communities... By nature of all of those ceremonies, we automatically do what it takes to get our spiritual lives back on track, and if that means forgiving an oppressor or whatever it is... Because it is more important to be active in who we are as opposed to just constantly Im a victim, Im a victim.... Thats why I think the Act of Repentance is important, not for myself, but for the other ministers out there. --Rev. Chebon Kernell, Executive Secretary of Native American and Indigenous Ministries of the General Board of Global Ministries, on the 2012 United Methodist Act of Repentance Towards Indigenous People
