If you are interested in getting a tow dolly rental to move a vehicle of yours you might be curious what type of vehicle would be the best to use for pulling the dolly. Obviously you can tow a wide range of vehicles with a dolly. Usually they will be small or mid-size cars however the vehicle you will be using to pull the tow dolly rental is rather important as well. If you get a tow dolly rental from U Haul you can use your own vehicle and depending on its size it might work just fine or you may be better off trying to rent a U Haul truck or borrowing some type of heavier duty vehicle from a friend. U Haul has a few specifications for what types of vehicles can be used with their tow dollies. Of course there is probably plenty of margin for error in their recommendations nevertheless its a good idea to keep them in mind regardless what you feel the abilities of your equipment are. Typically you will be using a full size truck in the half-ton, three-quarter ton or one ton size class. Alternately you may be using an SUV or perhaps even a minivan. The vehicle pulling the dolly needs to be a hard top vehicle so your soft top Jeep is not going to cut it in this case. Youll need to have your lighting and related wiring set up and ready to go as well as ensuring that the vehicle doing the towing weighs at least 750 pounds more than the vehicle being towed. You will also need a Class 2 hitch rated for at least 3,500 pounds of weight and a similarly rated hitch ball that is either one and seven-eighths inches or two inches in size. The maximum ball height is 25 inches and you will need to have standard mirrors on both sides in order to keep an eye on the dolly and towed vehicle while in transit. The type of vehicle you will use to pull the dolly can vary based on the size of the car being towed. If you are pulling a fairly small and lightweight car you might be able to use a small pickup truck or van like a Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma or Chevy Astro. However if you are pulling a larger, full-size car with the dolly you will probably want to go with a larger truck like a Chevy Silverado or a Toyota Tundra. This will allow you to handle the load more safely. Not only will you need to be able to pull the weight of the car and dolly you will also need to be able to stop that same weight in a safe and controlled manner.
