If you are noticing the time stamp on this, youll notice I cant sleep. Forgive me for the length of this post...I hope youll read it all. Its election day! In a bit less than 19 hours, your voice will be heard - if you exercised your right to vote. The nation as a whole faces deep divisions, growing deeper by the day unless we all join together and fix our eyes on a common goal. I suggest: One Nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all. Likewise, our state faces some very important issues and its very important that everyone who can legally vote do so. And it is especially important for us in El Paso County...we need to make sure this state is more than Boulder and Denver. And our city...I have heard, more often than not, the voices of people frustrated with government at all levels and feeling like they just want to give up, throw in the towel, like they can do nothing to change things. And Ive been telling people that my campaign for a seat on Fountains City Council is an example of what one normal guy can do. Im not affiliated with a party or a platform or a ticket or a particular issue. I am ONE GUY who has decided that the only way things can change for the better at any level is to get involved, take a chance on himself and his neighbors, roll up his sleeves and take on a thankless job because too few other people are willing to do it. Why? Because Im proud to call Fountain my home now and I want to do what I can to make sure my kids - and you and your kids - can all say that. Annette, our kids and I been involved with this community one way or another for almost a decade (and actually, Annettes been part of this town for nearly 14 years at Jordahl Elementary). And for more than 2 years weve called Fountain our home. We love the small town feel we can still have in certain areas and we love being able to drive a few minutes up the road to buy just about anything we need. We love supporting our military families who are here today and off to their next assignment way too soon. We love talking to, and learning from, the deeply rooted ranchers and long-time residents here. I see the potential for a thriving community that attracts the best and brightest in all walks of life. The best educators, because they love what our school board stands for. The best employers, because they love our stable, high-skill workforce. The best small businesses, who know they are welcome here too. The friendliest faces in our stores and shops and restaurants. THAT is the Fountain I see in my minds eye. And THAT is the Fountain I hope to be part of molding and shaping. Of course, as the vote counts scroll across our TV screens later tonight, Ill be watching my own race. But even more important to me, Ill be watching for the voters decisions on some very important issues for our city. In short, I hope to see that our voters have said YES on 2B and NO on Amendment 66. 2B will provide dedicated funding for our fire department and eventually, I believe the savings on home owners insurance will more than offset any additional tax levy. Amendment 66 is a poorly written attempt at siphoning money from every district in an attempt to benefit very few, with no local control at all and no guarantee that any of the money ever ends up supporting actual education. If you voted for me, I truly and humbly thank you from the bottom of my heart for your confidence and trust. If you didnt, I still truly thank you for being involved in the electoral process. Either way, I will always be willing to listen to whats on your mind.
