If you are soon to be microchipping your dog or cat...read the copied and pasted note from a veterinarian about the different types of chips. It could help you decide which chip manufacturer to use. Copied and pasted from a veterinary website: Are all microchips the same? NO. There are essentially four types of microchips: ISO, AVID, Original US HomeAgain, and AKC. ( Cross-compatibility and standards issues via Wikipedia) ISO – International Organization for Standards – The most common microchip everywhere in the world except the United States (naturally). If your pet has an ISO chip, there is a chance it will not be detectable by a rescue or veterinary clinic using an AVID brand scanner. AVID – An encrypted chip protected by technology that prevents older scanners from revealing the chip number. Older scanners would identify that an AVID chip was implanted, but would not be able to determine the unique microchip number ; thereby forcing the user to purchase an AVID brand scanner, which is why a bunch of places have (only) AVID scanners . Recently, the codes that protected these chips have been revealed, and newer scanners are able to identify the microchip number of even encrypted AVID microchips. Still, if your pet is taken to a veterinary clinic or shelter that uses an old non-AVID brand scanner, they may not be able to determine your pet’s unique ID number. Original US HomeAgain – THE MICROCHIP USED BY LEO’S PET CARE – There are two kinds of microchips currently being manufactured by HomeAgain: ISO chips and “Original US HomeAgain” chips. HomeAgain ISO chips cannot be detected by AVID scanners , which are commonly used by many older veterinary clinics. Original US HomeAgain chips must be special ordered from HomeAgain, but these older-style chips can be read by essentially every scanner currently available in the US . UPSIDE: If your pet has an old style HomeAgain chip like the one we sell, every shelter and vet clinic in the US can find the chip. DOWNSIDE: If you travel outside the US, you may need a SECOND chip that fits the ISO standards (which we also stock). AKC – An inexpensive chip often implanted for cheap by shelters. These chips cannot be detected by the common AVID scanners, and should be avoided.
