If you ask me, I dont subscribe to the idea of secession of the North. You see, a quick perusal of our countrys history will clearly show that the rhetoric used is the same rhetoric that was used by our forefathers against colonialism. But after getting independent, did the independence benefit us all equally? Go to the North and appreciate for yourself how the inseparability of politics and tribalism in our country has rendered the independence concept a futile pursuit in as far as equality is concerned. Now, taking the philosophy of human beings seriously, I can clearly see the same thing happening if the Independent Republic of Northern Malawi were to materialize. Resources wont be distributed equally in that Republic. Politics will be on tribal lines and internal disgruntledness will equally be inevitable. The whole idea does not click with dictates of best interests of the public. I personally know that such a Republic would be a rare opportunity for me to be President, Chief Justice or indeed Speaker of Parliament in that Republic. But as a Statesman, my personal interest comes second to the interest of the masses. I believe were better off as one nation and, on that score, I would not, given a chance, vote for an Independent Northern Region. We northerners do not need to rely on Government politics to develop that region. All we need is to develop it ourselves. Instead of building those mansions here in the South, why not build them up North? Instead of buying that land for that business idea here in the South, why not do so up North? The argument that theres not enough infrastructure (good roads etc.,) is a lazy one. We need to garner a pioneers attitude and use what we have at the moment in order to make the change that we desire. We must forget about making huge and quick present profits in doing so and, instead, concentrate on leaving behind something on which posterity can start and continue in developing that place. The solution to our underdevelopment lies in the way we should do things now and not in having our own country. You can sue me if I have angered you. Savy?
