If you didnt plant it, dont pick it. Thats one of the signs employed as community, p-patch and parking strip/front yard gardeners try to deter thefts of carefully tended veggies and fruits. Other ideas include small fences around patches, less immediately desirable veggies planted on the front lines, friendly chats with visitors and knowing whose who in the garden. The photos are examples of signs that seem to work. And heres another list from a sad gardener who lost her prized fennel just as she was ready to harvest: • If I had known you liked fennel I would happily have planted more to share with you. • Your theft of my plants robbed me of the experience of growing my food from seed to table. • Even though you stole my plants, I really do hope you enjoyed them as much as I would have. • Plant thieves: I wish you had asked, or just taken one and not my entire crop. • If you keep taking my plants, it means I wont be planting them anymore. Ask and Ill share. • Next year Ill plant more, so there will some for both of us.
