If you go to any school football / soccer / basketball locker room before a game, or during half-time, you’re likely to see all sorts of energetic physical gyrations and hear enthusiastic shouts, grunts, growls, hoots, etc., all designed to invigorate the team for the ensuing gridiron ‘battle’; similar scenes might be witnessed at the victor’s ‘celebration’. Baseball doesn’t have a ‘halftime’, but the teams find other times to engage in somewhat ‘outlandish’ practices – ‘rally hats’ and the like – and beach volleyball has constant arm / fist pumps, butt slaps, and high-fives, all with the same intent. If you combine the two ‘practices’, you may be getting into dangerous territory – especially if you ‘smash’ a watermelon – within the ‘confines’ of the Charleston County [SC] School District and its ultra / super / hyper-self-righteous superintendent! Following the district’s inquisition of the players… Q: “Did you fondle the watermelon?”, and the superintendent’s statements… “There are some nuances with the interview with the coach that are personnel issues. There were some issues that I’m not going to go into.”, which resulted in the dismissal of the otherwise universally respected and admired high school football coach, one wonders how much intolerance exists for allowing the players to ‘misbehave’ so insensitively. Shades of ‘Chicken Little’ and the House Un-American Activities Committee! Get a grip, folks!!!
