If you have a back injury, you should avoid the deadlift, and substitute it for a seated row, or body weight back extensions, the deadlift is one of the best exercises you can do, its one of the big four compound lifts along with bench press, shoulder press and the squat, all these big lifts work so many different muscles throughout the body. for example the deadlift works primarily the lower back glutes and hamstrings, but also works the latissimus dorsi, the quadriceps, the calves, mid back, traps and forearms. its a great exercise to have in your program whether your goal is to get stronger, build muscle, lose fat or all of those.
