If you have a little time this weekend, please consider going through the Non-Radio Compendium we have all put together on how to get the show without a terrestrial radio show. Ill bet there is a way here for you that works for you! The many ways to listen to our show without radio are here and I keep updating this compendium, as people keep sending me more ways to get the show without radio! THE WAYS TO LISTEN TO THE NORMAN GOLDMAN SHOW WITHOUT “RADIO” If you don’t know what a “podcast” is, try this: podcasting.about/od/basics101/a/PodcastListen.htm The short version is, it is a recorded thing (like a show – but it is an electronic file – like an old vinyl record that got stored electronically – if you remember records!) that you transfer via the Internet to your own device (mp3 player; laptop; desktop computer; iPod, etc.) and listen to once it is on your device. You need an Internet connection and a device! Both can be very cheap or free – if you go to the library and use their computers – or an Internet café! Or, you listen directly off the Internet – if you are not on-the-go! ************************************************************************ If you already knew this stuff about podcasting, then my first piece of advice is to watch my YouTube video on this, as it is only 6 minutes and has visuals! https://youtube/watch?v=Pu5L_Yjihfw ************************************************************************ App streaming is not just for cars – it works on lots of devices – like smartphones with ear buds! People listen while jogging; on the treadmill; at the gym; baking; gardening, and so forth. Try our free app at normangoldman or the TuneIn app tunein/radio/Norman-Goldman-p225319/ or the iHeart Radio app iheart/talk/show/The-Norman-Goldman-Show/ ************************************************************************ You can stream live, free and anywhere via Facebook at: facebook/thenormangoldmanshow ************************************************************************ You can stream live, free and anywhere via our Chicago station, WCPT: chicagoprogressivetalk *********************************************************************** You can stream via our website: normangoldman ********************************************************************** Our friend Shawn E. in the San Francisco Bay Area sent this: Motorola Roadster Universal Bluetooth In-Car Speakerphone. Not only does it provide you a hands free speakerphone it also allows you to go FM mode and through your phone that is Bluetooth synced, listen to any streaming app (from your smartphone) through the speakers of your car. Near my neighborhood it is more clear than any of our radio stations. It also comes with a charger for the unit which usually costs around thirty bucks separately. It will search for the strongest FM signal and verbally tell you so you can set your dial…..There are other cool features. This is up towards the top quality regarding tech, but since I plan on doing it this way going forward…BAM! Only potential downside...$99 bucks but it gives you all the things that you need for your smartphone car connection! One more thing I took the speakerphone into a room in our house and it acts like a dock playing your show through speaker! *********************************************************************** There are Internet radio devices – truly “Internet radios”: amazon/Logitech-UE-Smart-Radio-Black/dp/B008X1BV9M Or type “Internet Radio Devices” into Google and watch what happens! Or look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_radio_device ********************************************************************** $5 a month podcasting at normangoldman gets you the show commercial-free (an hour becomes 38 minutes with all the top-of-the-hour-stuff and commercials gone) and you get the entire Beyond The Norm extra segment archives. If you have an iPhone or iPad, try this: appadvice/appguides/show/am-fm-radios ********************************************************************** This great idea is from e-mailer Stephen G.: Something people should be aware of is that in some parts of the country like Chicago and Seattle (I think) theres an outfit called FreeGeek that offers very low-cost rebuilt computers with free open-source Linux software. Mine only cost $40 at FreeGeek Chicago. I believe laptops are available under $100, and if you live close enough, you can volunteer and EARN your computer in exchange for your volunteer labor (so you dont actually need any cash at all). There is no way I would be able to afford a computer if not for FreeGeek. [NOTE FROM NORM: You can also buy things used, but working, inexpensively on EBay. Please see the note immediately below.] If you buy a used iPod Touch or Nano (as little as $15 on EBay) you can transfer our podcasts ($5 a month) from your computer or laptop (or go to the library and use their computers) and you will have A LOT of shows and A LOT of Beyond The Norm segments on your iPod Touch or Nano and can reload as often as you like. ************************************************************************* From Karen C. in an e-mail to me: Norm, theres an org thats set up in practically every city, community, town across the country...even the planet. Its called Freecycle: freecycle.org/ Anyone can sign up. You can post a request for a computer, laptop, cell phone, whatever, and people disposing of their unwanted items can respond. The idea behind Freecycle is to keep things out of landfills. It provides various pieces of needed hardware, even software, to people everywhere. The local one in east-central IL posts offerings of computers, laptops, cell phones all the time. ************************************************************************* Ever hear of a Bluetooth cassette? No kidding! Go to Google and type in “Bluetooth Cassette Adapter” and watch what happens! VERY inexpensive and easy! And, check these links: gizmodo/easily-update-ancient-stereos-with-ion-audios-bluetoot-1493128287 - AND - amazon/MP3-Player-Cassette-Adapter-Equipment/dp/B003Q9LRPO _ OR - compare99/compare.html?q=cassette-adapter&ort=Adapter-Cassette-Sale&adid=iaCkp56jx5Kip8bUkHSTptTH16WXWdDNoHKWlNHWyKNfdsLV1pamp8aI1m6ZlNbViZSalNOfxA%3D%3D&gclid=CPXFvtHh6LsCFcJ0QgodPysASw ************************************************************************* In your car: You can use the Bluetooth option: ehow/how_5969290_hook-wirelessly-through-car-radio.html ************************************************************************ In your car: You can use the “aux” plug-in: ehow/how_4897304_play-iphone-through-car-amplifier.html ************************************************************************ In your car: For an iPod: ehow/how_4540212_play-ipod-through-car-stereo.html From Dan S. in an e-mail to me: A lot of smart phones that are wifi-capable are free with your cell service now. They wont be latest & greatest but they will work. You can look up full tech specs and demos for free on almost any cell phone before buying at phonescoop and find out if the phone youre considering will do what you want. From Dan S. in a blog post to our website: This is for older car radios without aux jack or Bluetooth. You plug this into the headphone jack on your phone, pick what channel you want it to broadcast on, and set your radio to the channel the transmitter is sending on. You can also use it with clock radios, boom boxes, and home stereo systems that have an FM tuner. The transmitter is made by Scosche and costs less than $15.00 Denon Audio is an Android app that is free. It will stream 70,000 radio stations from around the world over wifi or cellular data, including WCPT out of Chicago, which is an independently-owned Progressive format station that carries Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Norman Goldman, Alan Colmes, Democracy Now, and a few more Progressive talkers. Its like having Air America + in your pocket. If you cant afford cellular data on your smart phone, you can go to Starbucks, Panera, Barnes & Noble, many independent restaurants, Caribou, the local library, etc and buy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, hop on the free wifi, and stream WCPT with your smart phone. If you have an old flip phone, you can get a smart phone free these days with most carriers. The free phones are usually slightly older models but most will do wifi and have headphone jacks that you can use this with. Check with your cell carrier and see what phones are included with your plan and if you can get an upgrade. Then go to phonescoop where you can look up the tech specifications and demo videos of most phones for free and see which ones suit your needs. Alternatively you can buy a used smartphone on EBay without a cell plan and just use it for web and email over wifi. Additionally, in most cases a cell phone can place 911 calls whether it has a cell carrier account or not. Many of these phones will also run Skype or Oovoo and the like where you can do voice calls with other users of the same voice-over-IP apps...including your kids or relatives if they have the same app on their phone. Those calls can be made over free wifi with no cell service on the phone. You can even make internet-only calls to other Skype users internationally. You just wont be able to call a phone number. You can also do email and web surfing this way. Make sure you at least buy a cup of coffee or something before hopping on though. You can be charged with misdemeanor theft in a lot of places if you use their wifi with no purchase at all. Even a hot tea will avoid that. From e-mailer Ron T.: Just a Quick Hint for your compendium. On listening to online broadcasts or whatever source. My car is an old ford Taurus station wagon 90. Heres the hint for people with older cars like mine. If you have a car with a AM-FM cassette player it may not have an AUX port the solution is a cassette adapter. I got mine a long time ago with a personal CD player but they are available online and Radio Shack I think. I use it because it’s cheap and the factory radio really does have very good sound and it’s paid for. A lot of the cars from the 90s have these and if you’re old you may not want or care to upgrade but still want new sounds. I have an old mp3 player that I use personally. But if you have a smart phone or whatever as long as it has a 3.5mm headphone this gadget will work for car use for cars with cassette players. ************************************************************************* This from e-mailer Todd M.: Hi, Norm. I just wanted to tell you that I can watch your show on my Samsung smart TV at home. Using the internet browser app that came with the TV, I went to your site, was able to click on the listen now and clicked on the video stream. It works great!! Its not full screen (the video), but it works and works great!! Keep on rocking the internet airwaves!! ************************************************************************* This from e-mailer Bill F.: I located an app called Dead Beef. Its from Sourceforge, so its apparent that they didnt have a marketing team to come up with a catchy name for the program. What it does do for me is let me listen to my choice of broadcast stations from around the country. In addition to WXXM, I listen to WCPT, KTNF KKZN, Margaritaville Radio and used to listen to the Portland station until they went away. When I drive, I patch it right into my car radio and it makes long drives a lot more tolerable. This is what he is talking about: https://play.google/store/apps/details?id=org.deadbeef.android And, there is this, from Mike in Idaho! I was listening to your comments on how the AM radio stations are dumping Progressive formats. In our state, Idaho, there are Eleven (11) AM stations with FOX, Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Savage, and local right wing promoters. There is No Opposition. The hate and discontent is rampant with people who believe the trash radio. Recently I was contacted for a radio survey, and I told them, I do not listen to local radio any longer as they lie to us and skew facts to promote their political agenda based on lies. I want to share with you how I get around the Trash radio, the 11 stations. I listen to WCPT in Chicago on my Internet Radio. The radio is connected via WIFI in my house. The radio I use is a Sangean WFR-20 WiFi Internet Radio & Media Player $214 at Amazon, the price of the radio includes access to 25,000 stations. I have had other radios and they were not reliable, but this one is very reliable, resets itself most of the time with power outages. Because I have a bunch of FM radios, I wanted to use them. So, I bought an FM transmitter (legal under FCC regulations if area of reception is limited), here is the unit: 0.5 W Fail-Safe Long Range FM Transmitter - FS CZH-05B - Newly Revised: Dual Mode now with RCA Inputs about $70. The result is every FM radio I own is now capable of receiving what the WIFI radio receives. The little FM transmitter is like a repeater that translates the Internet radio to my conventional FM receivers. I have used this for the last couple of years, allows me to hear WCPT on multiple FM radios around my home, garage, shed, while cutting grass. I no longer have to listen to local Trash radio. In my car, I have XM radio and listen to XM127. I also listen on my IPAD, IPHONE when I am somewhere else. But the little FM transmitter attached to the WIFI radio allows me to use my conventional FM radios from Walkman to stereo around my home. I do my best to promote the Progressives but I am outnumbered by the 11 AM Fox and Limbaugh stations in our local area. I tell them that I miss local announcements but will give them up because of the lying. Keep up the good work Norman, I enjoy your show, dont necessarily agree with everything but I do like to listen to you and thanks for the lessons. Mike in Idaho Grant W. suggested this – a wireless cube speaker: target/p/b-m-wireless-mobile-speaker-assorted-colors/-/A-14646162?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=google_pla_df&LNM=14641038&CPNG=Electronics&kpid=14641038&LID=10pgs&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=14641038&gclid=CMiq2IaNpb4CFY17fgodegcAtA
