If you have not heard The Builders and the Butchers, you really should. There are a lot of bands out there who claim to be a part of the Portland music scene, but B&B define it and transcend it. The Builders and the Butchers play a very strange trick. They take you to some dark, low place in the world, like the bottom of a lake, or a well, or a coal mine, then they set the whole place on fire and use angel wings to fan the flames. Their songs focus on the lost, the hidden, and the hopeless. They show you what its like to be damned and beyond redemption but somehow still find glory. For them the whole world is a rock to be turned over so they can see the mire underneath, then they sing the praises of the mire. Their fourth, and possibly best album, Western Medicine, just came out. You should buy it.
