If you in the Western Cape area make you get yourself to the InkuluFreeHeid and UCT SRC Soapbox taking place TOMORROWO October 3, 2013 at the Jammie Plaza at UCT InkuluFreeHeid and the SRC will hold a Soapbox event at UCT on Thursday during Meridian. The Soapbox model draws on images of Hyde Park soapboxes and others, where people used an open platform to air their views and engage with those of others to create meaningful discussion over issues. IFH’s Soapbox model works much the same. People are free to stand up and contribute to a dialogue that is loosely led by the theme of the event and a handful of selected speakers. Outgoing SRC member Kgotsi Chikane will lead an open discussion centred on the vital importance of voting, including the unique space it affords people to mould South Africa’s political future, the core values that should be looked for when choosing who to vote for and the potential value of spoiled ballots. Critically, this will not be a preaching session, but rather an active back and forth between people with differing viewpoints. Prominent student figures have been lined up to speak. Students and staff are encouraged to attend and actively partake by speaking in this fantastic forum. IFH and the SRC will run stalls on Plaza throughout the day and UCT Radio will provide sound for the event. Further, pamphlets will be distributed detailing the importance of voting and how one does vote. The ‘How To’ of voting will also be described in detail during the meridian Soapbox event.
