WHY DOES ANY SUBCONTRACTOR NEED TO IMPLEMENT ELM JOB COSTING Since I have published my book THE BOOK OF ELM COMMON SENSE SUBCONTRACTING WITH ELM JOB COSTING I have had the pleasure of communicating with many subcontractors in the business either by way of the internet or in my speaking engagements or by people I know in the business. What I have taken away from all of this is that many subcontractors have enormous misconceptions about job costing, what it does and what it means. A lot of this I understand as I have spent many years in the business and when I implemented ELM job costing as a major program at first I ran into a stone wall. Everyone was afraid of it, at best they though it was going to cost them their jobs. For the most part if they had any previous experience with job costing it was a negative. Otherwise they felt it was useless and they really didn’t need it. Some just didn’t get it at all, to them it was an accounting system and they already had an accounting system so why in the hell did they need it. It took a while but almost everyone came around and the system was used to manage millions in construction work. When the field understood ELM Job Costing was not an accounting package used to spy on the men and project management understood it really helped manage their work the system was well on its way. The company where I implemented the system believed in giving bonuses to their money makers and when everyone understood that the quickest and surest way to fat bonuses was with ELM Job Costing cooperation became the order of the day.
