If you missed this nominate Dear colleagues, Since 2013, Civil Rights Defenders annually awards a prominent human rights defender who, despite the risk to his or her own safety, strives to ensure that people’s civil and political rights are recognised and protected. On April 4, 2014 Ales Bialiatski, Head of the human rights organisation Viasna in Belarus, received the Civil Rights Defender of the Year Award. For more than 30 years, Ales Bialiatski has worked for democracy and human rights in the Soviet Union and Belarus. Today Civil Rights Defenders initiates the nomination process for the Civil Rights Defender of the Year Award 2015. The aim of the Award is to highlight the situation of human rights defenders at risk and to recognise the important work they carry out. The Award consists of a specially designed statuette, a diploma and 50,000 EUR - given to the recipients organisation to enhance its long-term human rights work. The Award Ceremony takes place at the annual conference “Defenders Days – Empowering Human Rights Defenders at Risk”, arranged in Stockholm on April 7-11, 2015 where Civil Rights Defenders gather human rights defenders from some of the world’s most repressive regions. Nomination Process The recipient of the Award is appointed by the Civil Rights Defenders’ Board, which chooses between three candidates presented by the organisation’s Secretariat. The Secretariat makes their choices based on nominations submitted by Civil Rights Defenders’ worldwide network of human rights defenders and human rights organisations. Nomination for the Civil Rights Defender of the Year Award is by invitation only. Candidates: Should have a central role in the human rights movement in the country or region where he or she is active Should have a long experience of working with the protection of civil and political rights in the country or region where he or she is active Could be in need of international attention to improve his or her personal protection Eligibility for Nomination: Only individuals, not organisations, can be nominated Self-nominating is not allowed Incomplete application forms will not be considered Since Civil Rights Defenders strive for complete gender balance between the recipients, the award will be distributed to men and women on alternate years. Therefore only nominations for female candidates will be accepted this year. The last date to submit your nomination is November 28, 2014.
