If you read this article, youll understand just why certain economical powers in the US were so keen to twist the EUs arm in to going along with their sanctions against Russia. They are trying to get two birds in one go as they say: get Putin to counter these sanctions by shutting off his gas supplies from Russia or by getting the EU to refuse to buy anymore gas from him so that theyll import more shale gas from the US (something of which the production unfortunately has a devastating affect on the environment at home in the US) or make him withdraw from Crimea so that Russia loses its only warm water port to make it militarily more vulnerable (theguardian/world/2014/mar/07/ukraine-russia-crimea-naval-base-tatars-explainer). So what do Europe and the Ukraine want to take home from the ongoing conflict between the Ukraine and Russia? For the Ukraine its obvious, they produce a lot of minerals and coal but coal is considered to be a very polluting source of energy so other then to light up some campers barbecues nobody wants it.. So since they dont produce any gas themselves but this big load of gas is pumped in to Europe via their country, they feel theyll be in a better position to demand Russia for a bigger piece of the pie if they become less dependent from the Russian sphere of influence in their country and more, hence their attempts to join the EU. As for the EU, they are probably playing the dirtiest game of all in this situation because a) They dont want citizens from a massive country like the Ukraine to be allowed to move freely in their other countries b) They have always been shitting themselves about a possible invasion by Russia and therefore wouldnt mind seeing it loose its warm water port in Sevastopol c) They dont want to arouse Russias anger and become an economic victim of their own sanctions. So its the EU whos kind of lost in this whole thing and whos final position will probably end up playing a major role in this conflict. The sooner the EU makes it clear that theres no chance of the Ukraine joining them and the sooner the Ukraine realizes that, the sooner theyll realize that they cant keep holding Russias gas for ransom because theyll just build some other pipelines (some of them which are already planned) to bypass them. So as much as the Ukraine may not want to hear this, Russia is much more of an ally to them then the EU. If they keep considering Russia as their enemy, they risk ending up with nothing anymore!
